Hi Helen,
Your name caught my eye during a early morning search of the web -- for obvious reasons. Great photography, I did enjoy looking through your porfolio.

Thanks for your message Jessica - 'Stuff' is just everything other than deliberate portraits - it is not meant to be derogatory in any way. I am 99% sure that the man on the bench was not homeless. He was wearing expensive clothes and was leaning on a soft leather briefcase. I really appreciate your thoughtful comments.(Posted on 2007-08-03 21:52:00 by )

I enjoyed looking at your photos. Some of the angles you used on the people really made me want to know more. The red floating flower in with all the algae mush was a striking photo, too, reminding me of a sort of "diamond in the rough" concept. What interested me most, however, and what inspired me to leave a comment was that the homeless man on the bench with the umbrella was not listed under "People" but rather under "Stuff" instead. When I saw the hand photo, I thought perhaps it was because you do not see the man's face, and so he is not a person. The image is one that makes me both amused and sad; I enjoy him holding the umbrella and the apparent childishness atmosphere you captured, yet I am saddened to think what circumstances brought this faceless person to such a point--a point in which it's questionable if he even qualifies for the "People" category. Thanks for the thoughts! :)(Posted on 2007-08-03 19:23:00 by )

These are among the most exquisite photographs I have seen in a lifetime of looking at photographs. Patience is your hallmark, and the quick eye to recognize and capture the essential image, that 125th of a second that might have been lost amid a thousand others if you hadn't your wits about you. One of the best photographs I have ever taken was of three horses huddling beneath a plane tree on a rainy morning in Christchurch Meadow in Oxford in October of 1987. People sometimes remark on how lucky I was to have been there at that moment to capture that instant. But that 1/125 exposure involved huddling in a disused doorway in the rain across Abingdon Road for 30 minutes. Much of it was luck, but much more was patience, and much, much more was the eye that is keen and passionate enough to pull the single infinite moment from the millions of ordinary moments in which it swims. I have been abe to do it once or twice, but you do it with certaintly and passion, and with almost alarming regularity. Bless your continued endeavours.
